Cristiano Ronaldo breaks new goalscoring record

Cristiano Ronaldo has set a new record in the Saudi Pro League after scoring the most goals in a single season.

The Portuguese international has enjoyed a successful first full campaign for Al Nassr, finishing in second place behind league champions Al Hilal. He may not have been able to lift silverware with the club, but Ronaldo was more than happy with his achievements, making history for his goalscoring efforts.

He scored twice in his team’s 4-2 win over Al Ittihad, bring his goal tally in the league to 35, surpassing Abderrazak Hamdallah’s previous record of 34 in the 2018/19 season.

Across all competitions, the former Manchester United star bagged 44 goals and 13 assists, also scoring in the AFC Champions League and King’s Cup.

The forward wasted no time in sharing his pride on social media, saying: “I don’t follow the records, the records follow me.”

His achievement has also seen him become the first player to finish as the top goalscorer in the top division in four different countries: La Liga, Premier League, Serie A and now the Saudi Pro League.

In an interview with SSC, Ronaldo voiced his excitement after reaching the momumental record.

He said: “I’m very happy. Firstly because the team won and finished the league well. Then to break a league goal record, I have to confess it makes me very happy, I wasn’t expecting it.

“For me it’s important. The most important [thing] is always the team. We are in good shape. We ended the league well and now we have to win the Kings Cup.”
