Man Utd suffer blow in manager search as key target nears new contract

Kieran McKenna is expected to sign a new long-term deal at Ipswich Town, closing the door on a potential move to Manchester United, a report has claimed.

McKenna became an interesting target for top European sides after guiding Ipswich back into the Premier League for the first time in 22 years. He joined the Portman Road side in 2021, gaining back-to-back promotions with the squad, leaping from League One to England’s top flight in just two years.

Before Ipswich had even had chance to prepare themselves ahead of their new league venture, McKenna had begun to attract the attention of rival sides, with United appearing as a main option for the 38-year-old.

But, now it looks as if United will have to look elsewhere if they plan to replace Erik ten Hag, with McKenna expected to sign a new long-term deal at Ipswich.

A report from The Athletic reveal McKenna’s change of heart, as Ipswich look forward to life back in the Premier League with him by their side.

The news will come as a blow to United, who were reportedly keen on organising a deal for their former assistant manager. McKenna spent five years with the Old Trafford side, first as Under-18’s coach, and then later as part of Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s backroom staff.

The Dutchman still remains in charge of the Red Devils, but may be relieved of his duties once a season review has been completed.

The Ipswich boss had also looked like an option for Chelsea, who decided to suddenly part ways with Mauricio Pochettino earlier this month, but the Blues are currently pursuing a deal for Leicester City’s Enzo Maresca.
